Three years ago, the New York Jets made Louisville offensive tackle Mekhi Becton the 11th overall pick in the NFL Draft, hoping he’d improve the team’s pocket protection for the next ten-plus seasons. We have yet to see Becton make that instant impact the front office hoped to see in the Big Apple.
After not always being in the best shape heading into the season, part of Becton’s struggles may be his own fault. There have been times when the former first-round pick has reportedly weighed as much as 380 pounds. Sure, he’s 6-foot-7, so Becton is expected to top 300 pounds, but having a bit more agility wouldn’t hurt, not only for his production but also for his long-term health.
While the offensive tackle has struggled, we also can’t act like Becton has always had a fair shake. After starting 13 games as a rookie, Becton managed to start just one in his second season, requiring surgery on his knee. Becton wound up missing the entire 2022 season, meaning he’s played just one game since September of 2021.
Even though the Jets have had to make other plans, relying on others such as soon-to-be 38-year-old five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Duane Brown instead, there’s hope Becton can turn in a strong season in 2023.
The 24-year-old is at least doing his part by getting his weight down, reportedly recently weighing 340 pounds, according to Pro Football Network. If Becton can stay healthy, the opportunity to reclaim a starting role should be available in New York, but as coach Robert Saleh isn’t afraid to remind us, Becton has to earn it.
