A new update on the job security of New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas gives the impression that Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending injury may not be a satisfactory excuse for another losing season.

One has to wonder if the Buffalo Bills had played in Week 1 more like they have since, where would the New York Jets be after three weeks? Heading into their Week 4 game against defending champion Kansas City Chiefs, the team is 1-2 and were barely able to eke their lone victory against a Bills team that was not themselves in the season opener.

Obviously, future Hall-of-Famer Aaron Rodgers suffering a torn Achilles after four plays had a massive effect on their prospects this season. Yet, considering some of the players they have on offense and their talented defense, the head coach and general manager’s reliance on backup QB Zach Wilson may be what makes or breaks their tenures with the organization.

Saleh has consistently taken a public stance to show endless support for the former first-round pick, and that has reportedly rubbed many in the locker room the wrong way. Douglas has shown similar support by not seeking out a strong backup option despite Wilson’s poor play last season and since taking over the starting job in Week 1.

New York Jets head coach not guaranteed to return in 2023, even if Aaron Rodgers were healthy

It has frustrated many New York Jets supporters, including franchise icon Joe Namath. And has led many to wonder if the coach and GM’s jobs could be on the line if they have another bad season or if they will be given a pass by owner Woody Johnson since Rodgers was expected to be a key part of their success in 2023.

On Sunday morning, The Athletic’s NFL insider Dianna Russini offered up an interesting update that makes it seem like both still have notable expectations from their boss this season.

“There is a lot of football to play between now and then, and it could be impactful football for the futures of head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas. Two team sources say Jets owner Woody Johnson made no guarantees about Saleh’s and Douglas’ status before or after losing Rodgers to injury.”

NFL head coaches are getting less and less time to succeed as standards across the league increase. Saleh being out after three seasons would not be unusual, nor would it be for Douglas to get the hook before the final year of his contract which ends in 2024.
