A new report about the New York Giants 2024 NFL Draft strategy claims general manager Joe Schoen could be employing a very sneaky strategy to add more draft picks to their total haul this month.
There has been a whole bunch of speculation about what the Giants will do when this month’s draft kicks off on April 25. The organization owns the No. 6 overall pick and while that is a pretty good spot to be in, it may not be where the front office wants to be.

After a breakout season in 2022, starting quarterback Daniel Jones regressed in 2023 before his career-long issues with injuries reared its ugly head and ended his season early. It has made the Giants look harder at finding his replacement in this year’s draft. Unfortunately for the G-Men, there are several QB-needy teams ahead of them in Round 1 who are likely to select the signal-caller they would want to invest a top-six selection in.
While there have been rumblings the team would love to trade up to take elite prospects like Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye, it looks unlikely rival teams ahead of them are willing to part with their selection and a chance to land a future franchise QB in a year with a strong quarterback class. That is why the Giants may be looking at options behind them in Round 1.
New York Giants hoping to scare teams into making a Round 1 trade with them?
New York has been having meetings over the last week with QB prospects they may not be able to get and some that might still be on the board but could be seen as a reach at No. 6. And according to The Athletic’s NFL insider Dianna Russini, the team may be employing an interesting strategy to scare other teams into a trade to move up and take a QB with their selection.
“While Jones enters year two of his four-year, $160 million extension and is just 26, his successor could be on the table,” Russini wrote. “The Giants are a team showing strong interest in the QB position. Over the last 10 days, they hosted Michael Penix Jr. and privately worked out Drake Maye and J.J. McCarthy. Either (1) They want to draft a quarterback, or (2) They want teams to think they need to trade with the Giants if they want one.”
It will be interesting to see if the strategy works, and if it’s a smart one. The New York Giants have a lot of issues that a young QB won’t fix alone, so moving back in Round 1 and getting a top 10 to 15 pick and an extra selection in a later round would do more to help them address multiple needs.
