The New York Giants continue to be linked to some of the top quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft. It’s somewhat of a surprise given that New York signed Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160 million contract roughly a year ago.

However, Jones is coming off a torn ACL and has not morphed into the franchise quarterback New York had hoped for. In six starts before suffering that knee injury a season ago, Jones threw all of two touchdowns with six interceptions. He led the Giants to a mere 1-5 record during that span.

This came after the former first-round pick from Duke led the Giants to a surprise playoff appearance the season before.

With the draft roughly a month away, Giants owner John Mara has given the team’s brass the green light to select a quarterback with the No. 6 overall pick. He’s even open to New York trading up if general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll fall in love with a quarterback.

“If they fall in love with a quarterback and believe that it’s worth pick No. 6 or moving up, I certainly would support that,” New York Giants owner John Mara said on Monday, via ESPN. “I know they’re looking at the quarterbacks. You’ve seen that. They’ve gone to some of the pro day, we’ve had some of those guys in. I don’t think they’re even close to making a final determination yet as to which way we’re going to go on that. Those discussions will happen over the next few weeks.”

It’s expected that quarterbacks will go off the board with the first three picks of the draft. Caleb Williams is slotted to go No. 1 to the Chicago Bears. The Washington Commanders and New England Patriots are also expected to go quarterback at two and three, respectively.

New York has been linked primarily to Jayden Daniels (LSU) and J.J. McCarthy (Michigan). At this point, it’s unlikely either will be available at six. Trading into the top four might be in the cards here.

The good news? The Arizona Cardinals are open for business with the fourth selection. Moving up just a couple of spots to secure that potential franchise quarterback could make sense.

As for Jones, the 26-year-old quarterback will be a member of the Giants next season. It does not matter what happens in the upcoming draft.

Moving off Jones ahead of the 2024 campaign would come with a $69.32 million dead cap hit. Making the same move next March would save roughly $19 million against the 2025 cap.
