New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen provided some positive updates on quarterback Daniel Jones and his recovery from a torn ACL.

In speaking with reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday, Schoen indicated that Jones should be ready to go for training camp this summer.

“Daniel’s trending in the right direction right now,” Schoen said about Daniel Jones. “He started throwing two weeks ago. He’s doing it stationary, he’s not moving yet. There’s some hope that he may be able to do something in the spring, 7-on-7, and the hope is that he’ll be ready for camp.”

That’s the good news. The bad news? Jones has dealt with several injuries over the past two seasons. Add in his lackluster overall performance, and the Giants’ quarterback situation is a hot topic right now. Schoen touched on that, too. He made it clear that Jones’ injury issues will impact the team’s decision-making process at quarterback this offseason.

“The reality is he’s coming off three injuries in two years,” Schoen said. “That’s facts. It’s something we’ve gotta consider. We’re gonna address it through free agency and if there’s an opportunity in the draft — we’re gonna look at every position, not only quarterback because we do have needs across the roster.”

New York is slated to select No. 6 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. It remains questionable whether the team will utilize that selection or trade up for a quarterback. It was just ahead of last season that the Giants signed Jones to a four-year, $160 million contract. They are pretty much linked to him financially through only the 2024 campaign.

Jones, 26, was the No. 6 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Duke. He threw just two touchdowns compared to six interceptions in six starts a season ago before suffering a torn ACL.

There is a legitimate chance that the Giants will target a veteran as insurance in case Jones proves he can’t remain healthy. But the more eye-opening scenario would be to use either that sixth selection or trade up for an heir-apparent to Daniel Jones. Schoen did not shoot down that possibility on Tuesday.
