While many New York Giants fans may be hoping the team selects a quarterback, or at the very least an elite offensive lineman, with their first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft it seems many around the industry believe they are more likely to go in a surprising direction with the sixth overall selection.

This will be another important offseason for the Giants. After surprising the league in 2022 and reaching the NFL Playoffs they were highly disappointing this past season and ended the year with a 6-11 record. However, the desire to get better sooner was heightened in recent weeks with reports of serious drama in the New York coaching staff.

The poor results and growing issues put even greater emphasis on the organization getting it right with its first selection in April. For a team that had many issues this past season, there are several ways they can go, and “best player available” isn’t a bad strategy in the event. However, it seems like the Giants have two clear needs.

There are major questions about if Daniel Jones is the answer for them long-term at QB as he missed the majority of another season due to injuries. However, a case could be made his injuries are tied to a lack of competent blocking on the line, outside of rising star Andrew Thomas. That’s why it seems like a QB or lineman would make sense with their first pick in the NFL Draft.

Well, various draft experts around the media world mostly see them going in a different direction. NFL Draft predictions from The Athletic, NFL Media, Pro Football Network, CBS Sports, and other outlets consistently see the Giants taking a wide receiver with their pick despite some very talented QBs or linemen likely still being on the board at six.

Washington star receiver Rome Odunze is a popular choice a few months out from the event. Also, LSU pass catcher Malik Nabers is another common choice with some in the media. Recent reports suggest the top three QBs in this year’s NFL Draft could be off the board before the New York Giants are on the clock at six.

The team could use more weapons in their wide receiver corps., however, a talented QB needs to get the ball to them and not be sacked first.
