The New England Patriots have been busy this offseason, upgrading both sides of the ball after winning just four games in 2024. While most of their additions have come on defense, the Patriots have used various methods to improve.

Their next attempt to add to the roster could involve trading a player who was just selected in the 2024 NFL Draft last April.

The New England Patriots didn’t just find their franchise quarterback last season by selecting Drake Maye third overall in the first round of the NFL Draft. They also found a high-potential backup quarterback, selecting Joe Milton in the sixth round.

Milton was stuck on the bench for most of the season. But when the Patriots had nothing to play for, Milton got a chance to show what he could do, starting and winning in Week 18 over the Buffalo Bills. He completed 22-of-29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown. He also chipped in 16 rushing yards and a touchdown to help seal the victory.

The 6-foot-5, 246-pound 25-year-old has great size to go with a rocket arm. Teams without a potential future franchise quarterback could fall in love with the idea of taking a chance on a player who could develop into a high-end starter, but that’s only if the Patriots are willing to trade him.

Yet, with so many teams still hunting for a quarterback, some are wondering if Milton could be a trade target.

According to Browns insider Tony Grossi of The Land On Demand, the expected asking price for Milton would start at a third-round pick, and that’s if New England is ready to negotiate. Grossi adds that the Browns have not shown an interest in trading for Milton.

“I floated the idea of trading for Milton last week with no evidence whatsoever the Browns had interest in doing so. There is no evidence they are discussing it. One drawback would be the cost. Sources closer to the situation than me expect the asking price of the Patriots to be a third-round pick. I’m not sure I’d make that deal, but I would definitely inquire to see if some conditions could be negotiated to make the deal more equitable. What about a fourth-round pick in 2026 that improves to a third if Milton plays a certain percentage of offensive snaps? He’s an intriguing talent, but far from a developed product.”

Several teams could have an eye on Milton, especially if they come up short in their pursuit of a new quarterback. Yet, why would the Patriots move on from such an affordable quarterback unless they get an offer that’s simply too good to refuse?
