The Philadelphia Phillies have primarily been focused on relievers and outfielders ahead of the MLB trade deadline, wanting to strengthen their bullpen and find an upgrade over Max Kepler. However, a new target has reportedly emerged on the team’s radar.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post shared that the Phillies could now be among the teams in the mix to acquire Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez.

Philadelphia placed third baseman Alec Bohm on the injured list on July 19 with a fractured left rib. He aggravated his rib cage injury against the Los Angeles Angels and the club expects him to miss several weeks of action.

Bohm has delivered modest production this season for the team, posting a .278/.324/.391 triple-slash line with a .715 OPS. However, he’s produced his lowest slugging percentage since 2021, and Philadelphia has been in the market for ways to improve its run production.

The question is whether the Phillies’ need at third base is pressing enough for them to get seriously involved in the bidding war for Suárez. The New York Yankees pivoted to acquiring Ryan McMahon when the Diamondbacks’ demands proved to be out of their price range.

As for other suitors, the Seattle MarinersHouston AstrosDetroit Tigers, and Chicago Cubs are known to be interested in Suárez. The two-time All-Star selection is widely expected to be moved by the MLB trade deadline on July 31.
