The Texas Rangers entered the season hoping to rebound as World Series contenders, expecting a pitching staff and lineup strong enough to make them buyers at the MLB trade deadline. Now, just days away from the July 31 deadline, Texas reportedly could be ready to move one of its top players.

ESPN‘s Buster Olney reports that Rangers’ All-Star outfielder Adolis Garcia could be acquired this summer. While Texas will not consider trading Jacob deGrom or Nathan Eovaldi, the club does seem ready to move on from its former postseason hero.

Garcia, age 32, is a two-time All-Star who seemed to be emerging as one of the best corner outfielders in baseball in 2023. During that season, he made the All-MLB Second Team, won a Gold Glove Award and earned his second All-Star selection in three years. He went on to win ALCS MVP and then later a World Series ring, finishing that postseason with 8 home runs, 22 RBI and a 1.108 OPS.

Since then, his offensive production has declined sharply. Over the last two seasons, García has a .228/.282/.396 triple-slash line with a .681 OPS, and he has more strikeouts (274) than hits (212) in 933 at-bats. Entering MLB games today, García ranks last among qualified outfielders in on-base percentage (.276) and has the second-worst wRC+ (86) among his peers.

Interested teams will certainly see a buy-low opportunity and hope they can help Garcia turn his offensive production around. Even if he can’t, the veteran right fielder is outstanding defensively. He entered the week leading all right fielders in Defensive Runs Saved (14) and he ranks in the 94th percentile for Baseball Savant‘s Arm Strength (92.2).

From the Rangers’ perspective, trading Garcia would mean creating more opportunities for other players with the hopes of it providing a spark for the lineup. At the very least, Texas has signaled to teams that it won’t be pursuing a total rebuild at the trade deadline.
