The Baltimore Orioles are planning to be very aggressive in free agency. According to Orioles president of baseball operations Mike Elias, the organization has enough payroll flexibility to add a “frontline starter” and a “top hitter” during the 2025 MLB offseason.
Elias’ bold statement comes on the first day of the 2025 MLB Winter Meetings in Orlando, proving that Baltimore will be in the market for big free agents. To this point, the Orioles have been connected to several elite pitchers, while the possible offensive players have been focused on Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber.
The Orioles desperately need starting pitching, but their lineup could be potent with Alonso or Schwarber. It is clear that Baltimore owner David Rubenstein has given Elias the green light to spend on free agents to help the organization. This comes off a season where the Orioles missed the postseason and have the fourth-best odds to earn the first pick in the 2026 MLB Draft.
Baltimore appears committed to making big moves this winter, and it’s definitely overdue. The Orioles are in the market for an elite starting pitcher and hitter after trading for power-hitting outfielder Taylor Ward. The organization is ready to spend money, and it should result in major free agent signings.
