While at Indiana University, his potential was evident early and it validated the hype coming out of high school. But then injuries nagged him his entire career at Indiana. The injuries came early including an ACL tear in his first year, and a sternoclavicular joint injury in his second year, followed by another ACL tear his junior year. The spat of injuries never ended in Bloomington and Penix Jr. played just 21 games over four seasons at Indiana. His best season as a Hoosier came in the COVID-shortened season of 2020 when Penix Jr. threw for 1645 yards and 14 touchdowns in just six games.

Despite his challenges at Indiana, Penix Jr.’s move to the University of Washington marked a fresh start and an opportunity for him to redefine his story.

As a Husky, Michael Penix Jr. not only demonstrated resilience by bouncing back stronger than ever, but he also showcased refined skills that propelled him to the top echelon of college quarterbacks over his final two seasons.

A key to Michael Penix Jr.’s success in Seattle was the fact he stayed healthy. His junior season was eye-popping. Under Kalen DeBoer, Penix Jr. led the nation with 4,641 passing yards and threw for 31 touchdowns and just eight interceptions in 13 full games. In his senior season, Penix Jr., who finished second in Heisman Trophy voting this past season, continued his success by throwing for 4,903 yards and led the Huskies to a National Championship game appearance vs. Michigan.

However, there are areas where Penix Jr. could improve including enhancing his consistency in timing within the pocket and increasing his accuracy on quick throws. Concerns about durability arise from his long history of injuries while adjustments may be needed at the NFL level due to his unique left-handed passing. Questions about how age and an extended college career could impact his development linger along with issues around a slower-than-ideal release resulting from his throwing mechanics—painting a picture of a talented yet flawed quarterback prospect. Can these be overcome at the next level? That’s the big question and where he ends up could have a lot to do with whether or not he’s able to be an effective starter at the next level.

Even with the flaws —which all pro prospects have— it’s the possible shorter career runway the older Michael Penix Jr. brings to the table that still leaves many teams concerned and might have pushed him from being a surefire Top 10 pick to a possible bottom first round or even second-round selections.
