Miami Dolphins’ Jalen Ramsey to undergo knee surgery, expected timeline for return released

Update: ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Jalen Ramsey suffered a knee injury that will require surgery. He’s expected to miss some regular season games. However, Ramsey’s ACL is said to be intact.

The Miami Dolphins are now on high alert for some very bad news after superstar cornerback Jalen Ramsey went down with an apparent knee injury on Thursday morning.

One of the goals of this offseason for the Miami Dolphins was to try and improve their defense, especially in the secondary. They were able to do just that by acquiring six-time Pro Bowler Jalen Ramsey in a blockbuster trade in the spring. However, there are big concerns that they may not have him on the field in 2023.

On Thursday morning, NFL Media reporter Cameron Wolfe was one of the first to report that “Jalen Ramsey was carted back into the locker room after a practice injury. Trainers were attending to his left knee.” In his report, Wolfe noted that Ramsey “grabbed his left knee” after defending star receiver Tyreek Hill on a play.

Obviously, this is very concerning news for the Miami Dolphins since non-contact injuries, which this appears to be, can often mean ligament tears in the joint. Earlier in the week, new Detroit Lions safety CJ Gardner-Johnson went down with a similar non-contact knee injury. Fortunately for him, it turned out that he had no structural damage to the joint after being evaluated by team physicians.

  • Jalen Ramsey contract: 2 years, $30 million remaining

The Dolphins acquired Ramsey in a March trade with the Los Angeles Rams that included sending tight end Hunter Long and a 2023 third-round pick to LA in the deal. The seven-year veteran has been an elite cornerback in the league since being drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016. He has earned All-Pro honors on three occasions, including in 2021 when he helped the Rams win the franchise’s second NFL championship.

Jalen Ramsey has two years and $30 million left on his contract with the Miami Dolphins.
