Toronto Maple Leafs forward Wayne Simmonds is expected to be sidelined for six weeks with a broken wrist, coach Sheldon Keefe announced Monday.
Simmonds sustained the injury after blocking a shot during the third period of the Maple Leafs’ 5-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday. The teams will complete a three-game set in Toronto on Monday night.
Injured forward Joe Thornton participated on the second line during the gameday skate on Monday, however he is not eligible to return to game action. Thornton, 41, is expected to be sidelined for at least two more weeks after sustaining a fractured rib last month.

Simmonds, 32, overcame a slow start by scoring all five of his goals this season in his past six games.
Simmonds split the 2019-20 campaign between New Jersey and Buffalo after being traded from the Devils to the Sabres on Feb. 24. In 68 games, the Ontario native collected 25 points (eight goals, 17 assists).
Simmonds has registered 504 points (256 goals, 248 assists) and 1,147 penalty minutes in 921 career games with the Sabres, Devils, Nashville Predators, Philadelphia Flyers and Los Angeles Kings.

Simmonds was selected by Los Angeles in the second round (61st overall) of the 2007 NHL Draft.
