Two historical programs in that of the LSU Tigers and USC Trojans are slated to meet here within the next few years. It’s also going to be a dandy matchup at an elite venue.
Multiple media reports indicate that LSU and USC will do battle at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Labor Day weekend to open the 2024 college football season.
We have absolutely no idea how good each historically rich program is going to be a few years from now. What we do know is that it’s going to be a heck of a scene in the desert metropolis.
Allegiant Stadium opened to the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders last season without fans in attendance due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s also the home of college football’s UNLV Runnin’ Rebels. There’s certainly going to be a lot of big sporting events at the multi-billion dollar stadium. That already included the Gold Cup soccer final between the United States and Mexico earlier this summer.
USC-LSU football history
These two college football powerhouses have played just twice in their histories. USC defeated the Tigers 17-12 back in 1979. That top-ranked Trojans squad included future NFL stars such as Charles White, Marcus Allen, Ronnie Lott and Anthony Munoz — the latter three of whom are members of the Pro Football Hall Fame.
A half-decade later in 1984, LSU returned the favor by defeating the Trojans by the score of 23-3.
As for what we can expect, USC heads into the 2021 college football season ranked 15th in the Associated Press poll with LSU finding itself one spot behind the Trojans. There’s every reason to believe that these two college football powerhouses will be among the top teams in the nation when they take on one another in Las Vegas three years from now on ESPN. Take that to the bank.
