Kansas City Chiefs reportedly in running to land former starting running back from AFC rival with game-breaker potential

A new report reveals that the Kansas City Chiefs have met with a former starting running back from a rival team that has the potential to make a big impact on the offense in 2024.

The Chiefs have quietly had a very productive offseason as they look to improve their roster for a rare run at a three-peat in 2024. Along with re-signing star pass rusher Chris Jones the organization added talented punter Matt Araiza, signed Carson Wentz to be their backup QB, and gave Patrick Mahomes another weapon in the passing game with Marquise Brown.

However, it looks like the organization may not yet be done making some savvy under-the-radar moves ahead of the 2024 NFL season. On Tuesday, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported “Free-agent running back JK Dobbins is currently in Kansas City on a visit with the Chiefs.”

JK Dobbins is one of the few notable backs left in NFL free agency and Schefter also claimed that sources informed him that the four year veteran “is expected to have a home very soon.” He missed all of last season for the Baltimore Ravens after tearing his Achilles in Week 1.

Why JK Dobbins would be a great addition for the Kansas City Chiefs

The big knock on JK Dobbins is a worrisome injury history. He missed the entirety of the 2021 season after tearing his ACL in the preseason. The Achilles tear in 2023 was a major disappointment for many around the Ravens since there were high hopes about what he could do after improving his pass catching skills in training camp.

If he is fully recovered, the second round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft has a lot of potential, especially in a platoon backfield with fan favorite Isiah Pacheco. In 2020 Dobbins averaged an impressive 6.0 yards per rush (15 games) and then 5.7 in 2022 (eight games) in his return after ACL surgery. He also tallied nine touchdowns in his rookie season off the bench.
