Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter is reportedly the latest professional athlete to find himself involved in a gambling scandal.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the 24-year-old big man is out of Monday’s lineup against the Brooklyn Nets as the NBA conducts an investigation into prop betting surrounding the former Missouri star.
“Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter is under investigation by the NBA following multiple instances of betting irregularities over the past several months, multiple sources told ESPN on Monday,” Wojnarowski reported. “At issue are prop bets involving Porter from games on Jan. 26 and March 20, multiple sources told ESPN.
In the game on Jan. 26 against the LA Clippers, there was increased betting interest on the under for Porter props, which for the night were set at 5.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists. There was also an over/under for Porter’s made 3-pointers, which was 0.5.”
That night saw Porter play just four minutes before leaving with what the Raptors noted was a re-aggravation of an eye injury. He did not score a single point in said game.
DraftKings Sportsbook eventually reported that the under on Porter’s three-pointers was the biggest money winner of that night’s NBA slate.
Jontay Porter stats (2023-24): 4.4 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 2.3 APG, 39% shooting
Porter, 24, is the brother of Denver Nuggets star Michael Porter Jr. He’s appeared in just 37 games. Prior to joining the Raptors this season, Porter’s only other NBA action was back in 2020-21 with the Memphis Grizzlies when he appeared in just 11 games.
“NBA players, alongside all league employees, are prohibited from betting on any league events, including prop bets. Violations of the policy could include fines, suspensions and possible termination of contracts, among other actions,” Wojnarowski reported.
