Joe Burrow re-injures calf in Cincinnati Bengals’ loss

Updates on Joe Burrow’s calf injury set up a concerning story to watch for the Cincinnati Bengals after an 0-2 start. Last week, when Burrow finished with new career lows in completion rate and passing yards, the first item that came to mind was the strained right calf injury the Bengals QB suffered during training camp. During Week 2, it became evident that his leg was still ailing the fourth-year QB when he was seen massaging and stretching his calf area.

While his performance was improved, Burrow still got off to a slow start, leading the Bengals to just 10 points in the first half. While the Bengals were much more competitive in their 27-24 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, Burrow also re-aggravated his recently injured calf.

While he completed the game, Burrow reportedly tweaked his calf late in the Bengals’ loss. The severity of the Burrow’s injury is unknown, and even the Bengals QB admitted to being unsure of how much damage may have been done.

“We’re going to have to wait and see,” Burrow said following the game. “I’m not sure how it’s going to feel in the next couple of days. It’s pretty sore right now but no telling how it’s going to feel. I think we’re going to take it day by day.”

Joe Burrow on re-injured calf

Burrow initially injured his calf on the second day of training camp back in August. The injury kept Burrow out of action during the Bengals’ preseason play.

There’s no telling how serious this latest setback is, but he does have the advantage of having an extra day of rest until Cincinnati’s next game, a Monday mash against the Los Angeles Rams on September 25.

Former undrafted QB Jake Browning is the backup in Cincinnati, and former third-round pick Will Grier is on the Bengals’ practice squad. Expect plenty of updates on Burrow’s status for Week 3 in the next few days.
