Gary Patterson is considered one of the most-successful head coaches in college football. At the helm with the Texas Christian Horned Frogs since all the way back in 2000, the 61-year Patterson returned that program to national relevance.

Shockingly, multiple media reports Sunday evening indicate that Patterson and TCU have mutually agreed to part ways — effective immediately. Former Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill, a top assistant on Gary Patterson’s staff, will take over.

To say that this is surprising would be a dramatic understatement. It also comes one day after TCU was blown out by Kansas State, 31-12, to drop to 3-5 on the season.

During his time with TCU, Gary Patterson posted a 181-79 record and earned 17 bowl appearances. That included a perfect 2010 season in which the Horned Frogs defeated Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl and finished as the No. 2-ranked team in the nation.

We’ll obviously have more information on this shocking development from Fort Worth. For now, the Horned Frogs will be led by the aforementioned Kill. The veteran coach served as Northern Illinois’ head man from 2008-10 before moving on to Minnesota where he led the Golden Gophers to a 29-29 record and three bowl appearances in five seasons.
