MLB is returning to the cornfields of Iowa for a sequel to this month’s popular “Field of Dreams” game.
The Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds will face each other in a regular-season game on Aug. 11, 2022 at the iconic movie site in Dyersville, Iowa, the league confirmed Friday. The news of a second “Field of Dreams” game leaked earlier in the week.
The National League Central rivals will face each other in another made-for-television event at the specially constructed field, which was configured to seat just 8,000 fans for its debut. The venue is located just yards from the actual field used in the 1989 hit film.
MLB considered its first trip to Iowa — a Chicago White Sox victory over the New York Yankees via walk-off home run — to be a success. It was the most-watched MLB regular-season game since 2005, with Fox Sports announcing that the game averaged 5.9 million viewers and peaked at over 6 million viewers from 8:45 to 9 p.m. EDT.
“The Cincinnati Reds are excited to be part of MLB at Field of Dreams in 2022,” Reds president and COO Phil Castellini said in a statement. “Following the outstanding presentation of last week’s inaugural game between the White Sox and Yankees, it’s an honor to represent Reds Country as the home team in next year’s game.”
“We are honored to be selected for the second edition of MLB at Field of Dreams,” Cubs president of business operations Crane Kenney added. “Given our long-standing affiliation with the Iowa Cubs and the fact the state is in our home television territory, the Cubs enjoy an incredible following in Iowa. We look forward to playing in front of our Iowa fans and expanding on the amazing success of the first Field of Dreams game.”
