Formula 1 just blinked and the 2026 regulations are already getting a significant overhaul, effective in Miami.

After three races’ worth of data from Australia, China and Japan, the FIA convened an online meeting on Monday with team principals, power unit manufacturer CEOs and Formula One Management. The result: unanimous agreement on a four-part package of 2026 Formula 1 regulations changes that will reshape how these cars perform for the rest of the season.

F1 Addresses Superclipping Mess as Part of Changes

The headline change targets superclipping — that maddening phenomenon where drivers spend chunks of laps harvesting energy instead of actually racing. Maximum permitted recharge is reduced from 8 MJ (megajoules) to 7 MJ, and peak superclip power increases from 250 kW to 350 kW. The intent is straightforward: spend less time recharging, spend more time flat out. Under the new parameters, superclip duration should drop to roughly two to four seconds per lap. That’s a meaningful reduction from what fans have watched through the opening rounds.

For races, the boost system also has a cap. The 150 kW is above the current power level at activation, specifically to prevent the jarring, sudden performance swings that occur when a driver hits the deployment button. The MGU-K will still pump out 350 kW through acceleration zones, from the corner exit to the braking point, but drops to 250 kW elsewhere on the lap. Closing speeds were getting dangerous. This addresses that problem without gutting overtaking.

Race Starts are Changing for Remainder of 2026

Race starts get attention, too, though that piece is on a slightly different timeline. A new detection system will identify cars with abnormally low acceleration off the line and automatically trigger MGU-K deployment to ensure a safe minimum. Flashing rear and lateral lights will warn following drivers. Miami is the test case with full adoption coming after analysis of how it performs there.

Wet weather also got addressed. Intermediate tire blanket temperatures are rising based on direct driver feedback, ERS deployment is reduced in low-grip conditions and rear lighting is being simplified for better visibility through spray.

The 2026 Formula 1 regulation changes agreed upon still need to clear an FIA World Motor Sport Council e-vote, but given unanimous stakeholder agreement on Monday, that’s a formality. Miami marks the turning point for the 2026 season — on and off the track.
