Here’s a blast from the recent past. Although he’s been out of the league since the 2019 season, the Los Angeles Rams are signing six-time Pro Bowl safety Eric Weddle to a one-year contract. After starting safety Jordan Fuller suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 18’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers, the Rams had an immediate need in their secondary.

They are addressing it by bringing back an old friend. After three Pro Bowl seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, the Rams signed Weddle for a year in which he started all 16 games for the team. Now, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Rams are once again signing Weddle, this time to help them for their playoff run.

Eric Weddle has been out of the NFL for two seasons

After two years on the couch after announcing his retirement from the NFL in Feb. of 2020, Weddle will attempt to return to glory at age 37. Weddle initially retired after playing through knee and shoulder injuries in his final season after a 13-year career spanning with the Chargers, Ravens, and Rams. After having his first-ever surgery at age 35 in what was deemed as a minor meniscus trim operation. He was believed to have only needed a few weeks to recover, but this is the first we’ve heard from him since his retirement.

Now, Weddle’s ready to give it another shot. We’re intrigued to see how much he has left in the tank. Weddle does not have a Super Bowl ring and maybe that’s part of the motivation behind returning for a 14th season here.

Weddle was a member of the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 2010s and is a Southern California native, where the Super Bowl will be held at SoFi Stadium. Maybe now he won’t have to buy a ticket.
