New York Mets closer and his Puerto Rico team advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic with a win over the Dominican Republic Wednesday evening.

Diaz took to the bump with a 5-2 lead and proceeded to close things out as Puerto Rico pulled off a stunner.

Unfortunately, Diaz was carted off the field after suffering a freak right knee injury as he was celebrating with his teammates in Miami. It was truly an ugly scene.

We hate to speculate on the severity of the injury. However, it just doesn’t look good. Non-contact knee injuries rarely ever are. Edwin Diaz was also seen in tears as he was carted off the field.

Obviously, this will have an impact on Puerto Rico as it looks to advance in the World Baseball Classic.

From a broader perspective, it could impact the New York Mets with the 2023 MLB season getting going here.

Diaz’s 2022 performance netted him a record five-year, $102 million contract with the Mets this past spring.

We’ll have further updates as they become available.
