NFL minds tab Drake Maye as top QB prospect over Caleb Williams

We’re approaching not only the start of the NFL season (training camps) but also the start of the college football campaign, which is sure to lead to plenty of storylines throughout the year. One focal point will be on the 2024 QB class, led by Caleb Williams and Drake Maye.

Both players are currently widely viewed as the likely top two picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, no matter who lands at the top of the draft order. Yet, as we saw up until the final moments of draft day in April, there is no consensus on who the No. 1 pick should be.

Although many would have you believe USC’s Caleb Williams is the current frontrunner. Yet, some around the NFL aren’t so sure.

Specifically, NFL Draft analyst Dane Brugler suggests, “There are some very smart people around the league that believe Drake Maye is the No. 1 QB.”

Maye, of course, is the North Carolina Tar Heels QB who put himself on the map last season with a fantastic freshman season in Charlotte. Like Williams, he’s a dual threat who’s arguably just as dangerous with his arm as he is with his legs.

Unlike this past year’s crop of talent, Maye checks the size box at 6-foot-5, 220 pounds. Yet, after redshirting his first year on campus, he’s played just one collegiate season. How the soon-to-be 21-year-old performs in his sophomore season will go a long way toward determining his future draft status.

Still, don’t overlook Maye this fall when dreaming about the next tantalizing QB prospect set to take the NFL by storm. While Williams is worth a watch, Maye has proven to be just as intriguing, if not more, in the eyes of some.
