Already boasting a two-time Pro Bowl cornerback with Trevon Diggs, now the Dallas Cowboys will have another playmaker in the secondary. Two-time All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore will be taking his talent to a fifth NFL team, adding the Cowboys to a list that includes the Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots, and most recently, the Indianapolis Colts.
Here are the Gilmore trade details, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
- Dallas Cowboys trade: Fifth-round compensatory pick
- Indianapolis Colts trade: Stephon Gilmore
Gilmore is headed into his age-33 season but is still playing at a high level. He was named to his fifth Pro Bowl team in 2021 with Carolina and still graded as the ninth-best cornerback by Pro Football Focus last season.
He’s a big addition to coordinator Dan Quinn’s defense, reducing pressure off Diggs to make plays while also giving quarterbacks a true pick-your-poison effect, deciding which All-Pro to target.
- Stephon Gilmore stats last season: 66 TKL, 2 INT, 11 PD
For the Cowboys to add not only a very experienced but also highly-skilled cover cornerback for just a Day 3 pick is an absolute steal.
Gilmore is under contract for just the 2023 season at a cap hit of $9.9 million. He’ll join a Cowboys defense that allowed the fifth-fewest points per game a season ago.
