The Dallas Cowboys were without starting quarterback Dak Prescott for their preseason opener in the Hall of Fame game against the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday evening.
The recently-extended Pro Bowler is sidelined with what Dallas has described as a minor shoulder injury. In reality, there’s no real reason for the Cowboys to play Prescott in a meaningless game. This is magnified by the fact that Prescott has been sidelined since the first half of the 2020 NFL season due to a separate ankle injury.
With Garrett Gilbert getting the start for the Cowboys, Hall of Fame quarterback and Fox Sports broadcaster Troy Aikman opened up about the Dak Prescott injury. In the process, he offered an opinion that might make Cowboys fans cringe.
“The Cowboys are downplaying it, but I think when your franchise quarterback is missing the amount of time he’s missing, I tend to think it’s probably a little bit more significant than what they have led on,” Aikman said during the broadcast.

This comes following a report from NFL insider Jay Glazer indicating that Prescott is dealing with more of a baseball injury. Dallas’ training staff has apparently reached out to the Texas Rangers’ staff to get some more help.
Impact of Dak Prescott injury
With Prescott sidelined, the aforementioned Gilbert has been taking first-team reps during training camp. The veteran also performed pretty well in the first half against Pittsburgh Thursday evening, completing 9-of-13 passes for 104 yards. Meanwhile, Cooper Rush and Ben DiNucci also saw action in the game.
The question now becomes how serious Prescott’s shoulder injury really is. These two latest updates are not great. If the Cowboys come to the conclusion that it’s more serious than they first let on, it would not be a surprise if Jerry Jones and Co. hit the veteran free-agent or trade market for a more suitable backup.
