University of Colorado football coach Deion Sanders has been absent from the team’s annual summer football camps, which began last week in Boulder.

According to reports, the 57-year-old Pro Football Hall of Famer is dealing with an unspecified health issue and has been recovering at his estate in Canyon, Texas.

His eldest son, Deion Sanders Jr., shared in a YouTube livestream on June 8th that his father is “feeling well” but did not provide a timeline for his return.

“When we get back in Boulder, I don’t know,” Deion Jr. said in a YouTube livestream on Sunday. “I’m waiting until my dad leaves. When he leaves, then I’ll go. Until then, I’m going to sit here with him.”

“He’ll tell you all soon enough what he going through, what he went through,” Deion Jr. added.

Deion Sanders Dealing With a Significant Health Issue

Sanders’ absence comes as a surprise, as he participated in Colorado’s summer camps in 2023 and 2024, a role included in his contract. But there have been signs that something is amiss.

He also canceled a keynote speech at the Sickle Cell Disease Research and Education Symposium in Florida on June 8 due to a last-minute “scheduling change,” with Magic Johnson stepping in as a replacement.

“Coach Prime” hinted at health struggles on a May 30 podcast with former NFL player Asante Samuel, mentioning a 14-pound weight loss and describing his condition as at “a whole other level.”

“What I’m dealing with right now is a whole other level,” Sanders told Samuel. “I’m coming back, but I needed this. I needed this exchange because I haven’t had any energy.”

Shedeur Sanders Refuses to Comment on His Father’s Condition

Shedeur Sanders, the Cleveland Browns‘ fourth-string quarterback (for now), refused to comment on his father Deion’s health situation.

During Tuesday’s post-practice presser, a local reporter mentioned the matter, but it was clear Shedeur had no interest in discussing the matter.

“I don’t know what’s going on,” Shedeur said, according to Sports Illustrated. “I’m here not to talk about Pops and them. I’m here for the quarterback of the Cleveland Browns.”

“I’m focused on learning this playbook and everything I’ve got to do to be the most successful quarterback I can be and be the best teammate I can be,” he added. “Outside of that, I don’t really have no thoughts or really opinions on it.”

As the Buffaloes prepare for their 2025 season opener against Georgia Tech on August 29, fans and the Colorado football community await updates on Sanders’ health and return.

His leadership has been pivotal, guiding the team to a 9-4 record in 2024. His absence, if prolonged, raises questions about the program’s immediate future.

Here’s hoping he has a swift and complete recovery.
