Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Sunday morning, putting his availability for Week 10 in jeopardy.

The NFL has conducted daily COVID-19 tests for all 32 teams since the regular season began, with new enhanced protocols following the Tennessee Titans’ outbreak. As a result of the new guidelines, Mayfield now lands on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

NFL news: Browns place Baker Mayfield on COVID-19 list

The Browns announced that one of their staff members tested positive for the coronavirus on Saturday morning. As a result, the team immediately conducted contact tracing to determine which players and coaches would be at risk due to exposure.

Cleveland quickly determined that Mayfield was one of the high-risk close contacts, requiring his placement on the reserve/COVID-19 list. As ESPN’s Jake Trotter notes, Mayfield hasn’t actually tested positive for the virus. However, NFL protocols require high-risk contacts to isolate and they must go five consecutive days with a negative test result to receive clearance.

The current timeline would allow for Mayfield to return to practice by Thursday, more than enough time for him to prepare for Week 10. However, if he tests positive for the next few days, Case Keenum would start next week against the Houston Texans.

The timing is fortunate for the Browns, who have a great chance of getting Mayfield back coming out of the bye. Additionally, running back Nick Chubb and edge rusher Myles Garrett could return from injuries next week.
