Former Detroit Lions cornerback Cameron Sutton turned himself into the police on Sunday in Florida on charges of domestic battery.

An arrest warrant was issued by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in early March for alleged domestic battery by strangulation. Authorities responded to a call of a “verbal altercation that turned physical” at Sutton’s home. A search for the cornerback began on March 7, but authorities were unable to find him or contact him.

While law enforcement was unable to locate Sutton, Lions’ team president Rod Wood told reports last week at the NFL league meetings that Sutton was at the team’s facilities when the organization learned of the warrant for his arrest. Wood said Sutton “kinda showed up expectedly to work out” and staff spoke with him, encouraging him to seek counsel and turn himself in.

“Suggested he get counsel and do the right thing to turn himself in. After that, we met the rest of the day and the following morning to decide to release him.”

In a statement, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office announced that Sutton’s attorney contacted the HCSO’s offices to inform them that he was going to turn himself into authorities in Tampa. However, Sutton didn’t turn himself in until 8:24 p.m. local time on Sunday.

“After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man has finally made the right choice to turn himself in. Domestic violence has no place in our community, and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County. My thoughts are with this woman as she continues to heal from this man’s gruesome actions.”

A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office previously told the Detroit Free Press that when police first reported to the scene at Sutton’s home, they found wounds on the victim that indicated an interaction took place. However, the veteran NFL player had fled the scene before they arrived.

Sutton, who started 17 games last season for Detroit, was released by the team on March 21. The Lions previously acquired cornerback Carlton Davis III earlier this offseason and signed Amik Robertson in NFL free agency to address their weakness at the position. Following Sutton’s release, cornerback is expected to be a need the team will address in the 2024 NFL Draft.
