New LSU head coach Brian Kelly blasted for fake southern accent during speech

NCAA Football: Louisiana State-Head Coach Brian Kelly Introductory Press Conference

Video of new LSU Tigers head coach Brian Kelly addressing the school’s students during their basketball game Wednesday night has gone viral.

In said video, the recently-departed former Notre Dame head coach apparently decided to pull out a southern accent as he addressed the students.

The problem? Brian Kelly is from Everett, Massachusetts — about a 14-minute drive from Boston. He’s in no way a southerner. That was not lost on all of those who had the joy of watching Kelly pull a Nicolas Cage from “Con Air.”

Brian Kelly already under microscope at LSU

Kelly’s departure from Notre Dame after 12 seasons as the Irish’ head coach drew a lot of media attention earlier this week. More than anything, it’s the way he departed.

In fact, there’s some major drama behind the scenes after he spent just two minutes addressing his now-former players without taking any questions. Said players found out about his departure from South Bend via social media, adding to the questionable actions on the part of the head coach. All of this comes with Notre Dame at 11-1 on the season and still holding out hope for an appearance in the College Football Playoffs.

To say that Kelly will be under a microscope in Baton Rouge would be an understatement. It’s a program accustomed to winning. Anything less than national championship aspirations will be seen as a failure in Lousiana. That’s for sure.

As for the Irish, athletic direcor Jack Swarbrick noted on Tuesday that Brian Kelly did not give them an opportunity to match the LSU offer. Defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman will be named Kelly’s full-time replacement.
