The NHL’s trade frenzy continues and with just one day left before the deadline, the Boston Bruins secured another key player for a title run in 2023 in a trade with the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday.

This morning, the Detroit Red Wings and the Boston Bruins made another NHL trade deadline splash when one-time All-Star Tyler Bertuzzi was sent from the Red Wings to the Bruins.

In exchange for Bertuzzi, Detroit will receive a top-ten protected first-round pick in 2024 from Boston, as well as a 2025 fourth-round selection. According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, Detroit will retain 50% of Bertuzzi’s salary for the rest of the season before entering free agency this summer.

Tyler Bertuzzi stats (’22-’23): 29 games, 4 goals, 10 assists, -12 +/-

The 28-year-old forward is in the last year of a two-year deal with Detroit worth $9.5 million (via Spotrac). He has 14 points in 29 games this season, having missed a significant portion of the Red Wings campaign as a result of hand injuries.

Bertuzzi brings an extra level of grit to the Boston Bruins, who are slated to win the President’s Trophy as the highest-scoring team in the NHL. Looking to the playoffs, he adds a physical element and brings some extra sandpaper to a lineup that’s already scary in its ability to score goals and wear down opponents. Adding Bertuzzi seems like a depth move that will provide extra insurance for the Bruins as they chase the Stanley Cup.
