Bill Belichick headed to Buffalo Bills? Former NFL coach says he ‘would not be shocked’ if it happens soon

One prominent former NFL head coach, and current ESPN analyst, believes the Buffalo Bills trying to make Bill Belichick their next head coach is not out of the realm of possibility in the next few weeks.

This past season was an up-and-down saga for the Bills. After starting the campaign 4-2, and scoring a big win against the Miami Dolphins, the team lost four of their next six and seemed headed to missing the playoffs for the first time since 2018. However, after firing offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey the offense took off and they stormed to the postseason and division title behind five straight wins.

Unfortunately, in the NFL Playoffs, the team again came up short and fell to rivals the Kansas City Chiefs for the third time in four seasons. It was another frustrating end for a franchise that has become a perennial playoff participant in the last five years. Yet they just can’t get over the hump and reach the Super Bowl under head coach Sean McDermott.

It is why he has been on the hot seat in the eyes of many NFL analysts and will be on shaky ground heading into the 2024 season. That is if he makes it to the season. On a Monday edition of ESPN Radio’s “DiPietro & Rothenberg Show,” former New York Jets and Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan made the case for why Bill Belichick taking over the job in Orchard Park seems like a perfect fit.

“[The Bills] are so close, man. They are so close,” Ryan said. “They had a ton of injuries. They had all this type of stuff which they had — everybody has. Now, this is the craziest thing. This might be the spot where Bill Belichick goes.

“I’m just saying if ownership thinks you’ve taken this team as far as you can — which I’m not agreeing or saying that they should do it. But this could do it. Who could take this to the next level? Well, Bill Belichick. And I’m not saying it’s definitely going to happen, but I would not be shocked.”

The New England Patriots and the legendary coach parted ways after 24 seasons earlier this month. Following his exit the 71-year-old has been linked to landing the head coach job for the Atlanta Falcons, however, the momentum toward that move has slowed in recent days.

There has been no indication McDermott will be fired by the Buffalo Bills but a recent report claimed a team with a head coach is considering a pursuit of the six-time Super Bowl winner.
