After the Atlanta Hawks decided not to move Dejounte Murray at the NBA trade deadline, there are now rumblings the face of the organization, Trae Young, could be on the block this summer.

The Atlanta Hawks’ 2023-24 has been a major disappointment as the team closes in on the All-Star break barely holding on to the final playoff spot on the Eastern side of the NBA Standings. It is why there was a great deal of speculation they could shake up the roster and trade Murray since his backcourt pairing with Young has not lived up to expectations.

  • Trae Young stats (2023-24): 27.0 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 10.9 APG, 1.4 SPG, 37% 3PT

However, the trade deadline came and went and Murray remains on the roster. After that surprising decision, veteran NBA insider Mark Stein reported in a new Substack post that the Hawks have “certainly convinced various rival teams that a Dejounte In/Trae Out course is going to be legitimately considered” in the offseason.

While Atlanta has not made a firm decision yet, Stein claims how they finish out their final 29 games this season will have a huge effect on the direction they will go with their roster.

“The decision to keep Murray, however, certainly has more than a few front offices out there believing that the Hawks could reach the point — provided this season doesn’t end well — that they entertain the most dramatic possible reset.”

An interesting wrinkle to the situation is that the NBA insider revealed “The Spurs have circulated for months among prominent league observers as a viable destination for Young’s offensive gifts,” and his talents would be a perfect fit alongside fast-rising superstar Victor Wembanyama. Almost like a new Tim Duncan and Tony Parker combo for the new age.

Stein also claimed the Los Angeles Lakers should be viewed as another top contender. LA was rumored to have an interest in a Trae Young trade this summer. The former first-round pick is having another strong season this year and earned All-Star honors for the third time in his career.
