The Arizona Cardinals are adding another veteran to the roster after agreeing to terms on a one-year contract with cornerback Malcolm Butler, the team announced Thursday.

The deal is worth up to $6 million, NFL Network reported.

He will join a group of new Cardinals that includes All-Pro defensive end J.J. Watt and wide receiver A.J. Green, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection.

It was at the Cardinals’ home field in Glendale, Ariz., where Butler made the most memorable play of his career: the interception of a Russell Wilson pass at the goal line in the waning minutes of Super Bowl XLIX in 2015. It sealed the New England Patriots’ win over the Seattle Seahawks.

Butler, 31, spent four seasons with the Patriots, followed by three with the Tennessee Titans. In 100 career games (84 starts), he has 406 tackles to go with 17 interceptions — two returned for touchdowns — and 82 passes defensed.

In 2020, he made a career-high 100 tackles and registered four interceptions and 14 passes defensed.

Butler figures to assume the No. 1 cornerback duties with the departure of Patrick Peterson, who signed a free-agent deal with the Minnesota Vikings last week.
