Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers’ entire first-team offense has yet to take to the field through two preseason games this summer. Some starters have played, but Rodgers has remained on the sidelines.
On the surface, this seems a tad interesting given that Rodgers and Co. are working with a completely new offense under first-year head coach Matt LaFleur.
Rodgers himself doesn’t seem too concerned.
“In the preseason, you don’t carry those wins over to the regular season. I do find it interesting that some teams get a pass this time of the year,” Rodgers said. “The Rams don’t play anybody and not many people talk about that fact. Now the counter would be, ‘Well this is a new system.’ I get it, but we’ve spent a number of practices from May and June and training camp in July and now in August running this stuff, running unscripted periods, where he (LaFleur) has to call the play in.”
To be fair, the Rams did get some criticism for resting their starters during Sean McVay’s first preseason with the team back in 2017. They responded by putting up an 11-5 record and winning the NFC West. Los Angeles has continued with that theme this summer after earning a Super Bowl appearance in 2018.
Rodgers is a true professional. If he doesn’t think preseason play matters much, who are we to question him?
Though, if the Packers do start the regular season slow, questions about this summer strategy will pop up once again.
