Martellus Bennett interested in unretiring, joining the Patriots

Martellus Bennett

News that the New England Patriots reportedly traded for defensive end Michael Bennett on Friday apparently wasn’t enough for the defending champions.

As one of the most consistent pass rushers in the game, Bennett will add both experience and strength to the Patriots’ defense. It sure didn’t hurt that New England fleeced the Philadelphia Eagles in the trade.

But in another piece of information following that trade, ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Bennett’s brother, tight end Martellus Bennett, is interested in ending his one-year retirement and joining his brother in New England.

Bennett, 31, last played for the Patriots back in 2017 after spending the earlier part of that season with the Green Bay Packers. Though, he only saw action in two games.

The former Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champ put up his best season with the Chicago Bears back in 2014 — recording 90 receptions for 916 yards.

If the Patriots are interested, Bennett would likely serve as Rob Gronkowski’s backup. Recent indications are that he’ll return to New England after considering retirement. The Pats are in need of a tight end after moving on from Dwayne Allen earlier in March.
