Report: Patriots claim Martellus Bennett off waivers

Martellus Bennett

Pro Bowl tight end Martellus Bennett is about to return to the New England Patriots. One day after being released by the Green Bay Packers, Bennett has reportedly been picked up off waivers by the defending champs.

Bennett signed a three-year, $21 million deal with Green Bay during the spring. This came after he spent all of one season with the Patriots, recording 55 receptions for 701 yards and seven touchdowns for the eventual Super Bowl champions.

New England decided against bringing Bennett back as a free agent this past spring after acquiring fellow tight end Dwayne Allen from the Colts. But with Allen failing to pan out behind Rob Gronkowski, the team decided to go back to this veteran.

Bennett, 30, was released by Green Bay with a failure to disclose designation after he missed last week’s game with a shoulder injury. The team will look to recoup some of the $6-plus million it gave the tight end in guaranteed cash.

But for now, Bennett returns to a team that saw him have a tremendous amount of success last season.
