Report: Sammy Watkins re-injured foot, could be ‘significant’

Chiefs receiver Sammy Watkins

The Kansas City Chiefs might have to go the rest of the way without the services of Sammy Watkins, who reportedly re-injured his foot during practice Thursday.

According to Carrington Harrison, Watkins had an MRI on the foot, and the injury “could be significant.”

For a team that has already lost one of its key playmakers (Kareem Hunt) and has Super Bowl aspirations, this is potentially a huge blow. Remember, Watkins was supposed to be one of the biggest additions to this team in 2018 and signed a monster contract we poo-pooed back in March.

Most of the season, Watkins hasn’t lived up to that contract. In nine games, he’s tallied just 40 receptions for 519 yards and three touchdowns. However, a couple of games showed the potential of the Kansas City offense with Watkins as a key player, and there was hope he’d be able to have a big role down the stretch.

Of course, Kelvin Benjamin was picked up, but anyone who’s watched him much recently knows he’s not a reliable or dangerous weapon these days.

If Watkins did suffer a significant injury that will keep him out for the foreseeable future, then Kansas City’s road to the Super Bowl just got that much harder.
