Former San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders linebacker Aldon Smith has turned himself into police. He had an arrest warrant issued in relation to an alleged domestic violence incident which included him fleeing the scene.

He’s now facing misdemeanor charges of willful infliction of corporal injury, assault with force likely to product injury, false imprisonment and vandalism.

The news of Smith turning himself in is significant, but not shocking. It had been reported on Monday night that police had talked to Smith’s lawyer about turning himself in.

The recent news surrounding Smith has been anything but good. Following the alleged incident, he was released from the Oakland Raiders, a team that he was only barely affiliated with in the first place.

Smith has a long way to go to get his life on track. His road back to the NFL (assuming one even exists) is even longer. But turning himself in seems like the first step towards making those things happen.
