There has been a lot of speculation regarding the Denver Broncos needing to upgrade their quarterback situation in order to compete for a Super Bowl heading into 2017. Von Miller isn’t buying into that sentiment, or at least that’s what he’s saying publicly.
In fact, he spoke up for the two quarterbacks Denver currently has on its roster, throwing his support behind them.
“I feel like Elway has always put us in a great championship position, whatever quarterback that we’ve had,’’ Miller said, per Mike Klis of 9News. “Me, personally, I like Trev. He’s done a great job for us. Of course, you’ve got to come back and do it in training camp but I like that healthy competition between him and Paxton. And who knows, Paxton could come alive and become a star. It happens every single year. I like our two guys that we have right now. If we were able to get somebody else, then that will be a decision of the guys in the front office. But I’m happy with where we’re at right now.’’
Miller might end up becoming a politician when his NFL career is finished. Reading between the lines here — “If we were able to get somebody else” — it seems clear he’s not going to be upset if the Broncos land an upgrade.
At this point, the one person that would seem to fit the description of an upgrade is Tony Romo, who has reportedly expressed interest in playing for the Broncos. Still, there are others in Denver who might not be interested in having Romo come on board. DeMarcus Ware recently made it clear he doesn’t want the Broncos to sign him, which is interesting considering Ware might end up back in Dallas.
One thing that we have to consider here is that Romo is likely to become a free agent. The Cowboys won’t be able to trade him with his current salary, which owes him $24.7 million in 2017. So he’s going to be available at a discounted price, likely on an incentive-laden contract.
That being said, Denver is certainly hoping Paxton Lynch can take some big strides towards becoming a franchise quarterback, and signing Romo could derail that process.
