No matter where you land on the entire Colin Kaepernick jersey controversy, we can all agree that he puts his money where his mouth is.
The embattled San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback announced last week that he would donate the first $1 million he earns this season to charity.
Now, still in the headlines after refusing to stand for the national anthem throughout the entire preseason, Kaepernick is making sure to continue giving back to the community.
“I want to thank everyone who has shown me love and support, it truly means a lot,” Kaepernick wrote Wednesday on Instagram. “I wasn’t expecting my jersey sales to jump to number one because of this, but it shows the people’s belief that we can achieve justice and equality for ALL! The only way I can repay you for the support is to return the favor by donating all the proceeds I receive from my jersey sales back into the communities! I believe in the people, and WE can be the change.”
Ever since Kaepernick’s protest took off in the mind of the public, his jersey sales have skyrocketed. He now has the best-selling jersey of any San Francisco 49ers player, past or present.
Donating the proceeds to said jersey sales is no small thing. It’s yet another example of the enigmatic quarterback making sure that he does more than just sit to protest the injustices we’re seeing in American society today.
