New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson suffers injury setback

New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson was slated to take part in his first All-Star Game later this month in Utah.

That possibility came to an abrupt end when Williamson suffered a hamstring injury during a game against the Philadelphia 76ers on Jan. 2.

Williamson has missed each of the past 20 games. It now looks like he’ll miss several more weeks of action.

Pelicans general manager David Griffin told reporters on Sunday that Williamson suffered a setback in returning from the hamstring strain and will miss multiple weeks of action following next weekend’s All-Star Break.

This is just terrible news for the former No. 1 pick and his struggling Pelicans team. Prior to originally going down early in the calendar year, the Duke product was in the midst of a tremendous season.

With Williamson sidelined the past 20 games leading up to Monday’s outing against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Pelicans have posted a 6-14 record. Overall, they are 12-16 when Williamson doesn’t play while boasting a 17-12 record when the forward suits up.

For Zion Williamson, this is just the latest injury setback in a career that has been filled with them. Prior to the 2022-23 campaign, Williamson had suited up in just 85 games through his first three seasons. That included missing all of the 2021-22 season with a foot injury.
