Loser: Drew McIntyre

Good grief. Anyone still holding on to McIntyre stock can go ahead and sell. It’s pretty evident the top brass don’t see McIntyre with the title anytime soon. And it is super unfortunate, as ‘The Scottish Psychopath’ over-delivers every time out. His promo game is phenomenal, he’s a proven company guy, and his in-ring work is crisp and believable. And yet, he seems stuck a rung below a few other names in the pecking order. Tonight was another reminder of that.
Winner: Jade Cargill

The storm has finally arrived. From the day she stepped foot into WWE, Cargill was earmarked for big things. A run as WWE Women’s Champion would be included and the trigger has been pulled in definitive fashion. It also comes with a major recent heel turn for the specimen that is Cargill, a far better fit, to be sure. She first made her bones in AEW as a badass heel and now WWE fans will get their first real taste of her in that role. She’s been set up for success; let’s see how far she takes it.
Loser: Tiffany Stratton

It seems Tiffy Time is up, for now. Stratton’s 300+ day reign with the WWE Women’s Championship comes to an emphatic end at the hands of Jade Cargill. Tiffy fans shouldn’t hang their heads too much, as she had a dominant run and was protected in defeat with a knee injury. Still, this signifies a step down for the rising superstar. Another shot at the top is surely coming in due time. But for now, Stratton concedes her seat on the SmackDown throne.
Winner: Dominik Mysterio

If there is a way to win, ‘Dirty Dom’ finds it. With Stratton’s loss tonight, Mysterio now stands as the longest-reigning current champion in WWE. In a hard-fought, banger of a triple threat with two capable contenders who had strong odds of winning, the champion retained to a raucous ovation. It’s been incredible to see his rise over the past year or so into one of the most over acts in the company. Right now, it feels he can do no wrong and he is absolutely reveling in it.
Loser: Jey Uso

There wasn’t much doubt to the result tonight, and that’s very telling. As popular as Uso remains with the crowd, his sole purpose tonight was as the fall guy. Unlike some other candidates that could’ve filled this spot, he could absorb the loss without substantial blowback. He’s had his run this year and a good portion of fans aren’t exactly clamoring for another immediate run. Plus, he has his own storyline with his brother Jimmy to fall back on. But in terms of winning the title? Jey is not the guy right now.
Winner: CM Punk

Almost 2 years after he shocked the world by returning to WWE, Punk is finally on top. SummerSlam may have been a sneak preview, but with Seth Rollins having to be out a while due to injury, the path is clear for Punk to be the main guy on RAW. He is both the logical and popular choice, which is a recipe for success. It’s truly amazing to see Punk once again at the top of the WWE, at 47 years old and with his extremely checkered history with the company. This is the pinnacle of his return.
