When it comes to pure power hitters, few can match New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso. The two-time Home Run Derby champion and three-time All-Star led MLB with 53 home runs as a rookie. In the four full seasons he’s played, Alonso has averaged 44 home runs per year.
After having an MLB record-setting payroll a year ago, the Mets have since tried to cut costs. Could that also include parting with Alonso?
The 29-year-old first baseman will be eligible for free agency for the first time as a pro next offseason, and despite his tendency to strike out a ton, Alonso will still rake in a massive contract. But it may not come from the Mets.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, “multiple MLB general managers believe the Mets will listen to offers for Alonso.”
However, Nightengale adds that no team, privately or publicly, has been officially linked to trade discussions for Alonso either. Still, as mentioned, many GMs around the league think the door is open when it comes to a trade.
The Mets have yet to hold any long-term contract discussions with their star slugger, which could be an indication that he’s not a part of their future plans. Or, maybe they just haven’t gotten around to sitting down at the negotiation table just yet.
