The Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline is almost here, which means the Washington Commanders have some key decisions to make regarding the future of Montez Sweat and Chase Young. Both former first-round picks are in contract years, and there’s been no indication that the Commanders are ready to commit to a long-term extension for either pass-rusher.
Now, with the Commanders sitting at 3-4, three games out of first place in the NFC East, there’s a sense Washington will become trade deadline sellers, according to one “high-ranking front-office executive.” The executive added that the Commanders have made both Sweat and Young available and are “looking for value.”
Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz took things another step further, indicating the Commanders may be prepared to trade one of the pass-rushers in an effort to “extract all the value possible,” knowing they won’t be able to pay both players this offseason.
Schultz says from everything he’s been told, it may take a second or a third-round pick to pry away one of Sweat or Young from the Commanders.
The Commanders have all their own draft picks in 2024, but trading Sweat or Young may give Washington a better chance at competing for the division crown next year with a deeper roster, especially if they know a contract extension won’t be possible.
