Golden State Warriors star guard Klay Thompson missed the entire 2019-20 NBA season after suffering a torn ACL during the 2019 NBA Finals. The three-time NBA champion has been working his way back into playing shape with the 2020-21 season slated to start in about a month.

In what might be puke-inducing news for fans in Northern California and around the entire NBA world, Thompson is apparently injured again.

Warriors’ Klay Thompson has significant Achilles’ injury

There’s really not a whole lot that can be said here. Thompson missed all of last season with a torn ACL. He’s been doing everything possible to work his way back into playing shape with the season slated to start in a month. If the MRI confirms these concerns, Thompson will end up losing two full seasons in the prime of his career. That’s just awful.

As for the Warriors, their hopes of contending for an NBA title in 2020-21 now take a major hit. Sure the team has time to add a starter-caliber two-guard to the mix. But said player is going to be nowhere near as good as Thompson. This is just devastating news all the way around.

Warriors’ Klay Thompson suffers apparent leg injury

It’s important not to jump to conclusions here. There’s no reason to speculate on the severity of the injury. However, it is potentially horrible news for both the Warriors and Klay Thompson.

Golden State is coming off an injury-plagued 2019-20 season that saw the team go 15-50. Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry played in a combined five games. Draymond Green also missed 22 games.

If this injury is serious, it’s going to have wide-ranging ramifications for a Warriors team looking to contend for an NBA title this coming season. Again, let’s hope it’s not.

Klay Thompson stats

Thompson’s importance to the Warriors’ success is about a lot more than basic stats. However, they do tell us a major story. The former No. 11 overall pick is a career 42% three-point shooter.

He averaged 21.6 points on 43% shooting from distance during the Warriors’ run of five consecutive NBA Finals appearances prior to last season.

Needless to say, this could very well change how Golden State handles the coming NBA Draft and trade season. The team has been in on some big names to team up with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. This could very well expedite things in that regard.
