The PGA Tour returns to the east coast after last week’s third major tournament for the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn., just south of the state capital of Hartford.
After Nick Taylor won the RBC Canadian Open in Toronto, the best golf professionals met at the Los Angeles Country Club last week for the 123rd United States Open. Out of all the 156 players in the field, it was Wyndham Clark who rose above the rest in Hollywood as he was able to edge some of the best players in the world at 10-under par.
This week, Clark and the top players on the PGA Tour are on hand for the Travelers Championship, which is the final designated event of the 2022-23 PGA Tour schedule.
TPC River Highlands is a par-70 course, measuring 6,852 yards. Last year, Xander Schauffele won the Travelers Championship by two shots at 19-under par over Sahith Theegala and J.T. Poston for his first PGA Tour individual title in more than three years.
With two of the last three winners recording 19-under par, a shootout is expected with the course playing 0.62 strokes under par over the last five years. As a result, players will need to hit greens in regulation, which was key for Schauffele last year, leading the field at an 87.5% clip.
This is the 40th year the PGA Tour heads to TPC River Highlands despite being one of the shortest courses on the schedule. The course still provides its challenges, especially on the three-hole stretch from No. 15 to 17, highlighted by the high risk, high reward 297-yard par 4 15th on top of it taking place a week after a major tournament across the country.
However, it has been easy for a few in the past, highlighted by the time Jim Furyk recorded a 58 during the final round in 2016.

Payout for the 2023 Travelers Championship
The total purse for the Travelers Championship is set at $20 million and the winner will receive $3.6 million. In addition, the winner will receive 500 points towards the FedEx Cup standings.
Who are some of the top golfers in the Travelers Championship field?
With this being a designated event, most of the top players are on hand. Only Sam Burns and Jordan Spieth are the healthy scratches among the 23 who have committed to the designated events through the Player Impact Program. In addition, Tiger Woods and Will Zalatoris remain sidelined this week as a result of their respective surgeries.
Ten of the top 13 players in the Official World Golf Rankings and each of the top 10 players in the FedEx Cup Standings are competing this week. That means the top 3 in the OWGR – Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy – made the cross-country flight looking to be in the winner’s circle.
In addition, with the FedEx Cup playoffs right around the corner, the pressure will start to arrive, especially for those trying to get inside the top 70 of the standings or want to improve their place for a better position among the top 30 who will play in the Tour Championship.
FedEx Cup standings places 65-75
65. Ben Griffin (529 points)
66. Aaron Rai (527)
67. Beau Hossler (522)
68. Justin Suh (518)
69. Matt Wallace (515)
70. S.H. Kim (513)
71. Danny Willett (505)
72. Davis Thompson (501)
73. Lee Hodges (496)
74. Joseph Bramlett (489)

5 players who the best chance to win the Travelers Championship trophy on Sunday
Xander Schauffele
The defending champion of the Travelers Champions comes to central Connecticut looking to have a better result after four rounds following last week’s push for a major trophy. Schauffele ultimately could not quite get it done after an opening round 8-under 62.
Like last week, Schauffele got off to a good start last year with an opening round 63. He followed that up with another 63 and then executed to the finish line. The negative motivation from the U.S. Open has the opportunity to energize him this week wanting to end the tournament on a better note.
Rory McIlroy
Despite finishing in second place last week, Rory McIlroy is in a lot better place right now than he was following the Wells Fargo Championship in early May. A missed cut at both The PLAYERS Championship and the Masters Tournament, two of the biggest tournaments before the month of May hits, in addition to dropping out of the RBC Heritage a week after the Masters due to his “mental and emotional wellbeing” was a sign that he was out of sorts.
After his T47 at the Wells Fargo Championship, he has four PGA Tour starts with T7s at both the PGA Championship and the Memorial Tournament followed by a T9 at the RBC Canadian Open before his runner-up finish last week at the U.S. Open. Four consecutive top 10s for a player looking to finish strong is a good sign for the reigning FedEx Cup Champion heading into the final stretch into the season, including this week.
Patrick Cantlay
Patrick Cantlay knew he didn’t play his best on the toughest test in golf last week playing close to home. However, Cantlay comes to a familiar and successful place at TPC River Highlands. Prior to Furyk recording a 58, the UCLA alum recording a 60 as an amateur during the second round in 2011, en route to a top 25 finish.
Cantlay, who has five top-5 finishes among his seven top 10s this season, ranks second on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: off the tee, fifth in strokes gained: total and sixth in strokes gained: tee to green while being seventh in greens in regulation percentage.
Scottie Scheffler
Despite not winning since the PLAYERS Championship in March, Scottie Scheffler has seven top 10s in his last eight starts, including five straight top-5 finishes. The only part of his game that is just behind, is his putting. But once putts are able to fall, he is invincible and a contender week in and week out with a PGA Tour season-high 13 top 10s.
Scheffler is coming off of a tied for 13th last year at the Travelers Championship looking to improve on his best finish this week.
Tommy Fleetwood
Besides Scheffler, Tommy Fleetwood has been one of the more successful PGA Tour players as of late. Fleetwood tied for fifth at the Wells Fargo Championship. A few weeks later, he lost in the playoff at the RBC Canadian Open before finishing top 5 at last week’s U.S. Open that was fueled by a 7-under 63 in the final round.
Fleetwood, who is still looking for his first PGA Tour victory, is in a groove and hoping to continue this week in Connecticut.
