Taulia Tagovailoa, brother of Miami Dolphins star QB Tua Tagovailoa, has entered the NCAA transfer portal for the second time in his collegiate career. The former Alabama Crimson Tide and Maryland Terrapins QB is the Big Ten’s all-time passing yardage leader with 11,256 passing yards and is sure to generate plenty of interest from teams in need of a steady hand.

Yet, there are still some complications surrounding Tagovailoa’s decision to transfer, meaning there’s no guarantee he’ll be allowed to continue playing college football for what would be a sixth season. The NCAA first has to grant Tagovailoa a waiver for another season of eligibility.

Any team looking to Tagovailoa are only looking at a one-year solution, yet he’s shown he’s capable of leading a productive passing offense across his three full seasons as a starter at Maryland. While Tagovailoa still has a major hurdle to clear before he’s allowed to transfer, here are three destinations that could make sense.

USC Trojans buy Miller Moss more time

Miller Moss flashed enough potential in the Holiday Bowl for the USC Trojans to feel confident in the young quarterback’s ability to lead the program, possibly even as soon as 2024. But head coach Lincoln Riley has also expressed an interest in adding multiple transfer portal QBs this offseason.

If Moss is still the future, then a one-year solution like Tagovailoa could make the most sense. Not only is he a big name, thanks to his brother’s NFL success, he’s also a former four-star recruit who now comes with tons of experience with 38 starts to his name. If the Trojans want to ensure their scoring attack doesn’t drop off drastically, having a ‘veteran’ like Tagovailoa could work wonders.

Miami Hurricanes move forward with Taulia Tagovailoa

The Miami Hurricanes are in need of a quarterback and are running out of proven options. Cam Ward is off to the NFL, Will Howard went to Ohio State. Who’s left?

Why not lean into the brother of Tua Tagovailoa? He’s already a fan favorite, and chances are, Miami fans would quickly fall in love with Taulia too, once they see his accuracy on display.

With plenty of in-house competition at QB, the Hurricanes will have a hard time sorting through all their options, but a case could be made for Tagovailoa to put them in the best position to compete right away in 2024.

Michigan Wolverines find J.J. McCarthy replacement

J.J. McCarthy has played his second-to-last game with the Michigan Wolverines. There’s no guarantee Jim Harbaugh will return for another season either. Yet, it doesn’t matter whether he does or doesn’t, the Wolverines still need to find a new QB for the 2024 season.

If Michigan loses in the CFP, he may feel compelled to leave for the NFL simply because of the uncertainty at the QB position. Yet, perhaps the allure of having a QB like Tagovailoa, who’s ready to help Michigan compete right away, changes everyone’s mind.

The Wolverines like their group of quarterbacks, including Alex Orji and Jadyn Davis, heading into 2024, but those players may need more time to learn and develop before they’re ready for the full-time starting role. That isn’t the case with Tagovailoa, who’s just looking for one more year of glory in college.
