There promises to be a pretty awesome cast of NBA players take to the stage when “Space Jam 2” starts taping in the not-so-distant future.
A week after it was reported that Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James will star in the sequel of the 1990’s hit comes this interesting report from TMZ indicating that producers for the project have already reached out to James’ teammate in Cleveland, J.R. Smith.
“We spoke to Smith’s rep Daniel Hazan … who says producers contacted him a few weeks ago to see if Smith would be down for a part — and J.R.’s ears perked up,” the gossip site reported. “As for the role — nothing’s set in stone, but producers have kicked around the idea of Smith possibly voicing an animated character … a la “the Monstars” from the original.”
Smith’s agent, Daniel Hazan, went on to indicate that there is “mutual interest” in Smith joining the cast.
It shouldn’t be a surprise that at least one of James’ teammates will be involved in the project. In fact, common logic seems to suggest that both Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love will also have roles in the movie.
What’s going to be interesting to see moving forward is whether some old-timers will be cast in the movie. Michael Jordan and Larry Bird both come to mind as possibilities, even if they are in extremely minor roles.
The film is expected to be directed by Justin Lin of “Fast & Furious” and “Star Trek” fame. There’s no release date scheduled and taping hasn’t even started. In reality, the project is in its infant stages.
