General manager points to Seattle Seahawks making bold move during 2024 NFL Draft

It’s a new era for Seattle Seahawks football in the Pacific Northwest. Longtime head coach Pete Carroll “mutually parted ways” with the organization after 14 pretty successful seasons.

He was replaced by former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald. Continuity with a defensive-minded head coach makes sense. But after just their third non-playoff season since 2012, there are going to be further changes within the Seahawks’ organization.

In reality, Seattle has fallen far behind the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC West. It is also a tier below the Los Angeles Rams in the division.

Could this lead to holdover general manager John Schneider making a bold move during the 2024 NFL Draft? One fellow NFL GM thinks so.

Per Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post, there is a thought process that Seattle could trade star wide receiver D.K. Metcalf as a way to accumulate more draft assets.

“Look at where the new coach came from [Mike Macdonald, Baltimore Ravens] — do they ever pay two guys at the same position? I’m just guessing here, but I could see [Tyler] Lockett staying and Metcalf going if somebody really wants him.”

There really is some strong logic to this thought process. First off, we’ve seen multiple blockbuster trades of wide receivers over the past couple offseasons. Teams like the Seahawks just are not in position to pay top dollar to multiple guys at that position.

  • D.K. Metcalf stats (2023): 66 receptions, 1,114 yards, 8 TD

Metcalf, 26, is playing under a three-year, $72 million contract. He’s set to count $24.5 million against the 2024 NFL salary cap. Fellow Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett is playing under a newish two-year, $29.66 million contract.

Seattle also selected wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba out of Ohio State in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He should be set to take on a larger role on the team’s offense.

Seattle boasts seven picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, including the 16th overall selection. However, it is without a second-round selection.
