The Seattle Mariners placed left-handed starting pitcher Justus Sheffield on the 10-day injured list with a left forearm strain and recalled right-hander Erik Swanson (right groin strain) from his rehab assignment.

Swanson, 27, and Sheffield, 25, were both acquired by Seattle when the Mariners traded away James Paxton to the New York Yankees in November 2018.

Sheffield, a first-round pick by the Cleveland Indians in 2014, started the Mariners’ series opener against the Yankees on Tuesday but lasted only 1 2/3 innings. He gave up six runs on five hits, walked three and struck out two.

In 15 starts this season, Sheffield is 5-8 with a 6.48 ERA.

Swanson has allowed only one run in 13 innings, striking out 14, walking six and registering one save. He has 45 career appearances and a 5.61 ERA in parts of three seasons with the Mariners.
